Radiation Medicine

The Radiation Medicine Program at Princess Margaret Hospital, within the strong academic and teaching environment of University Health Network, provides patients with the highest quality treatment for cancer.

The Radiation Medicine Program continues to contribute in advancing the science of cancer treatment and control. As a result of evidence based recommendations for cancer management and the explosion of technological advances, the Radiation Medicine Program continues to enhance the treatment planning and radiation treatment options available to its patients. The multidisciplinary teams that provide leading edge patient care and programs include radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, radiation physicists, radiation oncology nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

Princess Margaret Hospital provides the largest Radiation Medicine Program in North America with approximately 7500 cases treated in 2000/01. The program is currently undergoing major expansion with an emphasis on Precision Radiotherapy and Biologically Adapted Radiation Therapy. We currently have 17 bunkers, Brachytherapy, dedicated RT imaging including 3 CT Simulators and plans for a MR Simulator.

Research initiatives within the Radiation Medicine Program include the areas of IMRT; stereotactic radiotherapy; functional imaging for therapy planning and monitoring including fCT, MRS, and high frequency ultrasound; and most recently in Robotics for Radiation Therapy and Image Guided Therapy and Surgery.
