About the People

Dr. Sylvia L. Asa

The Laboratory Medicine Program (LMP) of University Health Network (UHN) provides academic, clinical service and reference testing leadership across multiple laboratory divisions: Clinical Biochemistry; Hematology; Clinical Microbiology; and Anatomic Pathology.

With over 425 staff, including 60 medical and scientific staff, it is the largest diagnostic lab in Canada and one of the largest academic labs in the world. Every patient at UHN is impacted by the tests performed in the Laboratory Medicine Program; as such, the program must continue to work seamlessly with all other clinical programs.

In addition to supporting UHN, LMP is also a partner with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, sharing an Executive Director and medical leadership. We also provide medical leadership to 15 other hospital laboratories in Ontario and clinical service to more than 150 hospitals in Canada.

The overall mission of the program is to advance laboratory science through research, education and exemplary service. Our vision is to be global leaders in laboratory medicine.
