FAQs for CEKT Course Directors and Teachers

What is CEKT?
Continuing Education and Knowledge Transfer (CEKT) is the name for a newly created office at UHN that coordinates the design and delivery of novel CE events, mostly of a small group, intensive skill based type with follow-up activities. In short, the events are meant to be the best education in the world on those topics. CEKT has been approved by senior management and is directly funded in year one through special funds from the CEO.

What benefits flow to me from doing Continuing Education activities?
Events from CEKT are expected to: (a) create novel education that should win awards and support academic promotion for faculty (b) develop new partnerships between attendees and faculty (c) generate profits that are shared between UHN and the relevant clinical or research program.

What will CEKT do?
CEKT will help conduct needs surveys, advise on best educational formats, help select faculty, administer and evaluate all events, and do all marketing and financial management of events. CEKT will also work with faculty on presentations.

What audiences and topics will it cover?
Any audience relevant to UHN is eligible. Primarily, this will mean physicians and scientists, but other health professionals, investors, and the public are also potential attendees. Topics will include clinical areas where UHN is acknowledged as a world leaders, and research areas where UHN also has special strengths and skills to offer.

Who staffs CEKT?
The director is Dr. Sagar Parikh, who in addition to being deputy Psychiatrist-in-Chief at UHN is also director of CME for the U of T department of Psychiatry and several professional organizations. Dr. Parikh has been course director for more U of T accredited CME events than any other faculty member, and won 3 local, 2 national, and one international education awards. He is also funded as a PI clinical researcher with CIHR, and teaches research skills as well as clinical skills.

In year I, Ms. Sherene Tay is the education assistant, and Ms. Kristen Sharpe, MBA, is the business advisor.

What is the educational expertise within CEKT?
In addition to Dr. Parikh, the CEKT has close links with educators at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education and the U of T CE office. A CEKT educator will be hired in year II.

What are the financial arrangements for CEKT events?
The education events are meant to generate revenue, primarily by having high tuition rates that reflect the unique nature and outstanding quality of such teaching. After payment of all expenses including faculty honoraria where appropriate and all event costs, the remaining net revenue is shared between the sponsoring program and CEKT.

What are the procedures and timelines for creating events?
After initial agreement from the program head, a directors group is formed consisting of two individuals from the program and Dr. Parikh. After initial brainstorming on possible topics and audiences, the CEKT office conducts a focused needs survey and environmental scan. Next, a planning committee meets to create the event , and then the event is transformed into a brochure so that marketing, accreditation, and further planning may occur. The timelines are 6-9 months from initial planning to conducting the event. Events are held only in the Toronto area, but extensive use of video-conferencing and similar technologies is anticipated.
