Consumer Health Information

Consumer health information is defined as any information that enables individuals to understand their health and make health-related decisions for themselves and their families (Patrick and Koss, 1995). Below are the web sites that you can find reliable health information in different diseases and conditions.   This site provides up-to-date information on diseases and conditions, healthy living style, health care, researches and statistics, etc to improve the health of all Canada's people.
WebMed (Canadian Medical Association)
  A source for easy-to-understand information on hundreds of medical conditions can be searched alphabetically or from the “Personal Health” and “Condition Centre” menu.

Consumer Health Information Services of Toronto Public Library
  Click on the “healthnavigator” to look for a variety of health topics.   The guides serve as a starting point for consumer to look for health information from the local library collections and the Internet. 
Southlake Regional Health Centre
  A great collection of health information with access to databases on many health topics.
Canadian Consumer Information Gateway
  A centralized, comprehensive source of consumer information and contacts compiled by more than 25 federal government departments and agencies. Click on "health" and then limit the information to the provinces of your choice.

Healthfinder
  A health resource maintained by the US Department of Health and Human Services.   It directs you to government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce reliable information for the public.
MEDLINEplus Health Information
  National Library of Medicine provides extensive resources on health topics, drug information, and references.   It has links to consumer health information from the NIH, clearinghouses, dictionaries, and clinical trials.   Information is available in Spanish and other languages.
Mayo Clinic
  Find reliable and easy-to-understand information on diseases and conditions, drugs, or tools to help you manage your condition or stay healthy.   Experts of the Clinic update materials regularly.
American Academy of Family Physicians
  All the information were written, reviewed, and regularly updated by physicians and patient education professionals at the Academy
Medem, Inc.
  The Medical Library of Medem holds a full range of patient education information and helps patients navigate subjects from introductory to advanced level materials.   The materials are provided by US's leading medical societies and updated regularly.
NHS Direct Online
  This is a website providing high quality health information and advice for the people of England. Their Online Encyclopedia covers a wide range of health topics which can be searched alphabetically or by subject.
