The Patient and Family Library is located on the main floor in the atrium at Princess Margaret Hospital. The library provides a welcoming environment where patients can come for information on their specific cancer and the supportive services available to them.
Aside from the loan of materials including books, videos, magazines, tapes and CDs, the Patient and Family Library also provides visitors with access to computers. The library website includes a list of Internet sites that have been reviewed and approved by the Patient Education Librarian, and the computers can be used for personal Internet research or to run the Oncology Interactive Education Series (OIES) CD-ROMs. Developed through collaboration with Jack Digital, the OIES multimedia series covers 23 separate types of cancer, and allows users to learn about their cancer at their own pace through different self-teaching methods such as video animations demonstrating the biology of cancer, narrated text, and video interviews with cancer survivors.
A wide variety of pamphlets containing useful information on various types of cancer and supportive and community services are available free of charge for patients and their caregivers. Visitors can request personal Internet searches or information that is tailored to their needs by filling out the Search Request Form. Other Patient and Family Library services include Patient Information Workshops and Personal Information Consultation sessions with the Patient Education Librarian.

The Patient and Family Library has a large collection of more than 3,000 resources about cancer and its treatments. Theses resources included pamphlets, books, videos, audio and video tapes, as well as copies of our CD-ROM series, and the Oncology Interactive Education Series.
You can view our holding or search for specific materials by accessing our Resource Catalogue. It is available through our PMH Patient Education Intranet site that is available through any of the computers in the Patient and Family Library and Resource Centres at Princess Margaret Hospital.
In order to meet the personal health and information needs of our patients at the University Health Network, the Patient and Family Library at the Princess Margaret Hospital has introduced a personalized search request form. This form will help the Patient Education Librarian to understand the specifics of the patient’s condition, treatment and information needs and to perform a search for information that is tailored to the individual.
The Search Request Form (SRF)
asks the patient to clarify their primary diagnosis, the location of any metastases, their treatment history and the type of information that they wish to receive. These requests can result in any or all of the following: recommendations from our library collection (books, videos, tapes, CD-ROMs); pamphlets; printed information from approved web sites; clinical information from medical sources; referrals to local support groups, community services or information sources; materials in other languages.
All materials are evaluated and approved by the Patient Education Librarian who is also available for personal consultation.
This type of request generally takes one to two weeks to complete. Information can be picked up in the library, mailed or e-mailed to the patient or family.
